Phil's story
For journalist and co-founder of Opening Bell Daily, Phil Rosen, starting his media outlet completely went against conventional wisdom.
Early on, Phil decided to, unlike other media brands, not put his reporting behind a paywall. For him, access to information is at a premium, and it was incumbent on him to eliminate that barrier entirely. His idea was also partly motivated by the experiences of his friends and family as they wanted to read his writing, but would always come face-to-face with a paywall.
“We’re in one of the most critical financial cycles of our lifetimes right now. And so much of the information exists behind a paywall.”
A three-year veteran of Business Insider, Phil had plenty of conversations with fellow reporters about creating a platform that removed these friction points around accessing high-quality, well-reported journalism. But they advised against it, citing that he'd lose all the benefits granted to him coming from a household name like BI.
"Reputationally and career-wise, it was a huge risk."
But he trudged forward anyway and is reaping the benefits of that decision. Now, as the voice of Opening Bell Daily, time is at a premium for Phil.
"I'm reporting. I'm doing writing. I'm maintaining the website and social. But I'm also doing sales calls. Juggling all of that is crazy."
For him, managing Opening Bell Daily's finances is important, but there isn't enough time in the day to do it. Thankfully, with Rho, he's been able to take the stress out of doing just that: from expense management to payroll, all with the added benefit of best-in-class customer support.
"It's super founder friendly."
